The Open Circle Swap Shop was held in the Open Circle house, John’s Green on Tuesday 8th March 2016 as part of International Woman’s Day. An invitation went out to the community to drop their gently used clothing to various location in Kilkenny, where they received tokens to be exchanged for clothes and fashions items at the event.
The week before was spent fitting the house out as a shop with rails borrowed from the Cancer Shop and Guineys Department Store. The Open Circle House was totally transformed from workshop space for artists to exclusive boutique. The rooms were filled with clothes, handbags, jewellery, and shoes. Thoughtfully set up displays sparkled and tempted swoppers to ‘spend’ their tokens. The upstairs back room was used as a pop-up shop for the Irish Cancer Support Shop, which also sold clothes and jewellery. The proceeds from this section of the house went directly to the Cancer Shop.
Ann Dunne, Open Circle member and a driving force in organising the event was on hand to help with style and fashion advice. Ross Costigan, fashion photographer was present to take photos and a seamstress from the Zip Yard was on call to assist shoppers with altering items.
The Swap Shop was a fabulous success with treasures found and shared. There was time to talk about why we choose the things we do to wear, where they come from and our place in the whole BIG picture of sustainable fashion.
