Culture Night with Open Circle at the National Design & Craft Gallery
Lino printing with Open Circle Arts for Culture Night at the Castle Yard, attracted a large audience including many families. who enjoyed cutting their own design on circles of lino and printing cards to take home. We had women from the current Open Circle group assisting with the cutting and printing, they were also available to answer questions from women interested in Open Circle for 2019. Our applications are open until 22nd October for women wishing to get involved in January 2019. The evening provided a wonderful opportunity for us to introduce Open Circle Arts to a wider audience of women in Kilkenny and for many it was their first encounter with the opportunities available to them through Open Circle.
We were delighted to show a short video in the National Design & Craft Gallery of work from a series of workshops which happened in the summer of 2018, when women from Open Circle worked with Textile Artist threadstories. Threadstories is exhibiting in the .OBJ Exhibition running at the National Design & Craft Gallery on culture night.
Two groups of women came together through Kilkenny Arts Office and Open Circle Community Arts, to work with visual artist threadstories, to coincide with False Hoods, threadstories solo exhibition at Kilkenny Arts Office, during the Kilkenny Arts Festival.
The workshops offered the opportunity for discussions around privacy, and how we share images and portray ourselves in the digital age. Working intuitively to explore sculpture and form in textiles, using stitch and fibre manipulation each woman created their own mask and unique portrait.
